Abstract
This study was to understand experience of loss, specifically related to death and relationship, in adolescence by using a consensual qualitative analysis. For the purpose of the study, a total of 11 individuals who graduated high schools in 2 years participated in an interview. The interview questions were designed to understand their experience of loss, the difficulties faced due to the loss, the coping strategies used, and the factors that were both helpful and harmful for them. A consensual qualitative analysis was conducted to analyze the data. The results indicated that participants experienced emotional responses such as grief, depression, and mortification and cognitive responses such as self-blame and denial. Additional responses such as, difficulty concentrating at school, strained relationships, sleep instability, and suicidal thoughts were also noted. Most participants used coping strategies including positive thinking, involving activities that they enjoyed, and seeking social support such as friends, family, or teachers. Participants reported they felt most vulnerable when others seemed unable to understand or empathize with their situation, when they avoided support, and when stigma was associated with the death or divorce. They reported positive changes after the loss such as personal growth, and negative changes such as having negative emotions and relationship difficulties. Last, the Implications, limitations, and suggestions for further research were discussed.
